Giving RentSafeTO more Teeth! (After It was Defanged)

Posted July 11, 2025

In the wake of the Toronto Ombudsperson’s report that came out last month, the tide has shifted.

For tenants and ACORN members, this has been the most opportune time: Carlton Grant (Director of MLS, who received the scathing report) is stepping down due to his incompetence (as stated by the Ombudsperson’s report) and after all of the grilling he received by ACORN members and press conferences.

The Ombudsperson’s report set the stage for items to come to Council that are in our “Give RentSafeTO Teeth” campaign. Motions were moved by the Mayor’s Office and Councillor Josh Matlow, which will be coming back to Committee and Council in September: remedial action and standardized compliance. As well as a STANDARD WORK ORDER! As for the colour-coded signs? Those will be coming to Council at the end of this month!

ACORN had a press conference sponsored by Councillor Josh Matlow that the newly elected Downtown Secretary, Stacey Semple, spoke passionately at! We need landlords to be held accountable due to their negligence, and this is just the first step.
